Development Update #25

I finished posing the last shots needed to complete day 6 yesterday and started rendering. I started with rendering the scene just before taking Mia out on her day 6 date since that was the one I had just finished posing. That finished rendering overnight and I started the pre Alice date scene rendering this morning. That is still rendering at the moment, but I believe it should finish up before I go to bed, so I can then start it rendering the last and largest section of remaining shots to render. That will be 57 shots and will probably take a little over two days to render. Looking through the shots already rendered, they are mostly good, but I will have to re-render one of the pre Mia date shots as there is a noticeable issue with Jamie's skirt in that shot. Overall I am very happy with the progress, and expect to release 0.3 to Fan and Super Fan patrons and subscribers by this weekend at the latest.

I also want to talk about some more long term work I have been doing. When I initially started writing this story, I was writing it directly in the Ren'Py script, and I have continued to do that since. It has worked, but I've never felt it was the best way to work. I had tried using Scrivener in the past for the story writing, but was never able to make myself get into it. I also had a bit of a story problem with chapter 2 in that I felt the setup to get to the chapters climax didn't really fit, it didn't seem like the primary initial action I had made fit for the characters, but I knew the general climax was what I needed to set up for chapter 3. After thinking about it for quite some time, I finally came up with the perfect solution for the problem. This solution also had the bonus of allowing me to introduce an interesting new ally for Rick and his friends, as well as nail down the identity of the specific person in the Syndicate that is ultimately responsible for everything that has happened to our Unexpected Consequences family, and the ultimate reason behind it. Getting back to the writing part, once I had the initial idea for this change, I decided it was a good time to try using Scrivener for writing again, and this time I got it to stick. I started writing the new scene in Scrivener and everything just clicked and I wrote what I find to be a very good and satisfying scene, one that is also much longer than the one it is replacing. Since then, I have gone on to start translating all of the chapter 2 story into Scrivener and making updates and improvements along the way. I'm very happy with how this process is going to work going forward and I will be able to easily translate my Scrivener scripts into Ren'Py when the time comes to start actually coding those sections of the story. Now I just need to spend the $60 to license it before my trial expires.
